The 1850 historic Manhattan Synagogue Beth Hamedrash Hagodol, known as the great House of Study, destroyed in a blaze set by a teenager. The contrast with the new high end condominium construction, out of scale to the area and the constricted ways of movement in the painting point to a moral collapse.
